These two black and white photographs capturing Else Wachenheimer-Moos pregnant with her daughter Isabel, and on the street with a dog were taken in Sofia in March 1928 by an anonymous photographer. I wonder, was it a friend, or a loved one who captured these moments? The framing feels so intimate, capturing Else in a way that feels both casual and deeply personal. I imagine the photographer trying to find the right angle, wanting to capture not just her image, but also the sense of anticipation and daily life. The texture of the photograph itself adds to the feeling. Each shadow and angle telling a story about time, place, and personhood. It is less about perfection, and more about a moment grabbed from the flow of life, a conversation between the photographer and the subject, now frozen in time. Perhaps it was the photographer’s way of marking time, of celebrating the ongoing conversation between a mother and her soon-to-be-born daughter, capturing her life.
