Recurring Theme is an undated painting by Jacqueline Hick. Hick came of age as an artist in the mid-20th century, a time when women artists were gaining more recognition, yet still confronted systemic barriers. In Recurring Theme, Hick defies traditional portrayals of the female form. She creates an alternative narrative centered on the raw, visceral experience of the body. The figures, rendered in earthy tones, seem to emerge from the canvas, their forms and faces indistinct, inviting the viewer to project their own understanding of the human form. The painting seems to capture the disquieting and the deeply human condition of physical existence. Hick’s art invites us to consider how we represent and perceive bodies, pushing against the constraints of gendered expectations in art. This piece is both a deeply personal expression and a reflection of broader societal issues.
