Curatorial notes
Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries created this book cover design for P.G. Buekers’ “Our Beetles” in 1912. The careful, almost scientific, mark-making, combined with a limited palette of red and black against the graph paper background, suggests a methodical, process-oriented approach. I’m drawn to the materiality of the work. The texture of the graph paper peeks through the design, creating a sense of depth and grounding the image in a tangible reality. The red ink is applied with precision, yet there's a subtle variation in tone, hinting at the artist's hand. Look at the stylized beetle in the center - its geometric patterns and delicate lines feel both representational and abstract. The graphic style reminds me of the Vienna Secession and artists like Koloman Moser. De Vries, like Moser, embraced ambiguity and multiple interpretations in his art. His design invites us to consider art as an ongoing conversation.
