Auguste Herbin made this painting ‘The yellow bridge at Ceret’ with oil on canvas. It’s a puzzle, right? It’s like he’s taken the landscape and broken it down into shapes, then put it back together in his own way. I can almost feel him, brush in hand, figuring it out. Maybe he was squinting to try and see the underlying structure of what was in front of him. The way he’s used greens and blues, and then those pops of yellow and red—it’s like he’s building with colour. I wonder if he was thinking about Cezanne when he made this; that feeling of solidity but also of everything being on the verge of falling apart. Look at how the yellow bridge pushes against the green hills! It's so strange, but also beautiful. It reminds me how painting isn't just about what you see, but about how you feel and think about what you see. We can play with these forms, interpret them, and find a new way of experiencing the world. That’s what art does, and I think it’s amazing.
