This is Albert Greiner’s photograph of an unknown man in military uniform. It was taken in Amsterdam sometime in the late 19th century when photography was increasingly used to capture images of individuals from various social classes. What does it mean to serve your country? Is it an honor or is it an obligation? This image portrays a soldier in uniform, his identity lost to time, but his serious gaze holds our attention. The trappings of military life are all here, the sword, the buttons, the epaulets; but the expression on this man’s face can be described as anything but certain. He is reserved, and guarded, perhaps even vulnerable. How does he feel about the role he is playing? How does he feel about the sacrifices he will make? The image offers no clear answers, but the sense of the personal, of the individual, still resonates. It invites us to reflect on the stories and emotions that lie beneath the surface of public roles.
