Pieter Jansz. created this drawing, "Ovale cartouche met wapen tussen twee leeuwen," sometime in the 17th century. The composition immediately strikes one as heraldic: symmetrical, formal, and imbued with symbolic weight. Jansz. used flowing lines and gradations of gray wash to produce a three-dimensional effect. This imbues the lions and heraldic elements with a sense of dynamic power, despite their static pose. The drawing's structure uses an oval cartouche at the bottom, supporting a complex arrangement of heraldic symbols: rampant lions, a shield, and crowning crest. Each element signifies status, lineage and power. The symmetrical arrangement, reinforced by the mirroring lions, emphasizes a visual language of order and hierarchy. Jansz. uses the heraldic form to communicate concepts of social rank, power, and identity. We are invited to consider how these visual forms, through their careful design and symbolic repetition, solidify cultural meanings and power structures.
