This drawing of a jar, made by Yolande Delasser, uses soft pencil lines and gentle washes of colour to capture a humble domestic object. It’s the kind of drawing that feels as much about the process of looking and describing as it is about the jar itself. I love how the tones in the jar are built up, layer by layer, creating a tactile sense of its rough surface. The blue floral motifs are bolder, but still retain a delicate quality, like faded memories. Notice how the lines aren't perfectly crisp; there's a slight fuzziness that gives the image a warm, inviting feel. It reminds me of old photographs, capturing a moment in time with a quiet, unassuming grace. There’s something very Giorgio Morandi about this piece, in the way that it elevates a simple object to a subject worthy of contemplation. It speaks to the beauty we can find in the everyday, and the power of art to help us see the world with fresh eyes.
