This print titled 'Gezicht op het Escorial' was created in the 19th century by an artist known only as Monogrammist AM. From an elevated viewpoint, we look out over the Escorial. This building dominates the composition but what does it say about power? The Escorial was historically the Spanish King’s residence: a large, classical style building with numerous columns representing a cultural legacy rooted in colonialism. The eye is drawn down the boulevard toward the building. The boulevard is populated by people who appear to be parading and celebrating. The print offers an idealised version of a society stratified by class and power. Who is included in this narrative, and who is excluded? It asks us to consider the relationship between the built environment and the social dynamics it reflects.
