George Hendrik Breitner made this sketch of some figures with pencil on paper. I love the immediacy of it; the way the figures seem to emerge from a web of lines, caught in a moment. The texture of the paper shows through, lending a kind of warmth to the cool graphite lines. There’s a looseness here, a kind of searching for form, which resonates with my own approach to artmaking. It's like the ghost of an image, barely there but full of potential. The way Breitner captures light and shadow with just a few strokes is really remarkable. Look at the shaded part beneath the table. It’s like a dark poem holding everything in place. For me, this piece speaks to the way artists build on each other’s ideas. There’s a touch of Degas in the composition, maybe, but Breitner makes it his own with that raw, almost impatient energy. It reminds me that art is always a conversation, a dance between the seen and the unseen.
