This mosaic of Saint Lawrence was made in Kyiv's Saint Sophia Cathedral by Byzantine artists. Here, Lawrence is depicted holding a jeweled box, likely containing the gospels or sacred relics, symbolizing the treasures of the Church. Notice the halo, a visual signifier of holiness, which has its roots in pre-Christian art where it was often used to denote power. Think of the sun disks adorning Hellenistic rulers. This appropriation shows how symbols evolve, imbued with new spiritual significance. The box itself, adorned with a cross, echoes the reliquaries of the era, yet it also calls to mind the classical cornucopia. While the cornucopia was a symbol of abundance and good fortune, here, the box represents a spiritual treasure trove, a transformation reflecting humanity’s enduring quest for meaning. Observe how these symbols engage us; the halo offers a sense of the divine, the box suggesting profound truths, all working to stir our collective memories and subconscious yearnings.
