Willem Geets created this intricate print titled, "Diverse verbeeldingen met betrekking tot het studentenleven," which translates to "Various representations related to student life," using etching. Geets, born in Belgium, lived during a time of significant social change, and his work often engaged with themes of identity and community. This print offers a glimpse into the world of students, likely at a university, portraying various aspects of their lives through symbolic imagery. The print is filled with characters and symbols: an owl, often associated with wisdom, juxtaposed with figures of revelry and caricatures. Together they offer commentary on the balance between scholarly pursuits and the more playful aspects of student life. It's also impossible not to notice that this is a distinctly masculine space, with little suggestion of women present. What this absence says about educational opportunities in the late 19th century is hard to miss. By capturing these scenes, Geets invites us to reflect on the experiences of those who came before us, and to consider how the pursuit of knowledge shapes us and informs our identities.
