This educational print by Broese & Comp., presents an array of animals to an eager young audience. It gives us a glimpse into the age of exploration and enlightenment ideals, and how other cultures were understood in the Netherlands. Notice how each animal is framed within its own rectangle, like specimens in a cabinet of curiosities. The accompanying verses, intended to educate, also reflect a desire to categorize and control the natural world. How might the depiction of these animals – the elephant, rhinoceros, camel, and others – shape the viewers understanding of the world beyond their immediate surroundings? Consider how the print reinforces a sense of Dutch superiority through the act of naming and classifying these ‘strange animals’. Despite its didactic intentions, the print invites wonder and curiosity. It reminds us of the power of images and narratives to shape our perceptions of self and other, knowledge and ignorance.
