Curatorial notes
Jens Juel sketched this study of a young woman with sanguine chalk on paper in the late 18th century. Notice the outstretched arm, a motif pregnant with symbolism. This gesture echoes across centuries, from ancient Roman orators to Renaissance depictions of classical muses, signalling offering, beckoning, and even supplication. Think of the countless Annunciations where angels extend a hand bearing divine tidings. Yet, here, the gesture is ambiguous. The extended arm might symbolize invitation, but the figure's averted gaze hints at something more complex—perhaps reluctance or introspection. This juxtaposition evokes a psychological tension, engaging us on a subconscious level. The recurring motif is not merely a visual quotation but a vessel carrying layers of cultural memory. Like a dream image, it resurfaces, transformed by the individual and collective unconscious, each time imbued with new emotional and psychological weight.
