Curatorial notes
This embroidery design by Hardman & Co. features Saint John the Evangelist, represented through his symbolic animal, the eagle. The eagle, traditionally associated with vision and spiritual elevation, takes us to a place beyond the earthly realm. Like the eagle that gazes directly at the sun, John's Gospel soars to the divine, contemplating the highest mysteries of faith. We see this symbol in ancient Roman art, where the eagle represented imperial power, and we find it again in medieval illuminated manuscripts, embodying divine inspiration. The figure carries a scroll that gives the saint's name, as it was customary for this symbolic representation. The persistence of this symbol across centuries speaks to our collective psyche, reminding us that certain images never truly fade, but continually resurface, adapted and reinterpreted to guide and move us.
