This black and white photograph captures the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, and was created by an anonymous artist. What I find interesting is the desire to represent a site, to document or record, the way a painter might want to capture a landscape. I imagine this photographer wandering the ancient streets, looking for the perfect angle, the right light. Maybe they were thinking about the weight of history, the layers of culture, the stories held within those stones. There’s a stillness here, a quiet reverence in the way the light falls on the dome. It reminds me of the paintings of Agnes Martin, where subtle variations in tone create a sense of meditative calm. It also makes me think about the act of translation – how every artwork, whether it's a photograph or a painting, is a translation of the world into a different language, a conversation across time and space.
