This illustrative print by Monogrammist G.J. tells a whole story, panel by panel. It's got a limited palette, reds and greens, all contained within a thin black outline, like a coloring book page. I can imagine the artist patiently filling in each frame. Each scene feels like a little stage play, a snapshot of a topsy-turvy world. What was the Monogrammist thinking? Maybe he was fascinated by human folly, or maybe just trying to amuse himself. These characters echo through time: they remind me of Hogarth, the 18th-century satirist, another artist drawn to the follies of everyday life. Artists are always riffing off each other like that, in an ongoing jam session. I wonder what Monogrammist G.J. would think of the lineage to his work?
