Curatorial notes
This mosaic from Hosios Loukas Monastery presents us with Saint Luke, rendered in the traditional Byzantine style. Note his right hand, where the thumb touches the ring finger, a gesture of blessing or teaching. This hand gesture, the benedictio latina, appears in antiquity, adopted by early Christians to signify divine favor. We can trace this motif through the centuries; it resurfaces in Renaissance paintings, papal portraits, and even modern depictions of saints. This continuity speaks to a profound human need to connect with the sacred through symbolic language. Consider how the weight of tradition infuses this image with a sense of timelessness. These gestures tap into the collective unconscious. In the saint’s solemn gaze, one can see the enduring power of faith. The benedictio latina is not merely a hand gesture; it's a vessel carrying centuries of belief, a potent symbol echoing through time, constantly renewed and reinterpreted.
