Curatorial notes

Here we see, "Faramarz Encircled While Battling Bahman," a page from the Shahnameh, or Book of Kings, a Persian epic poem. The poem, completed in 1010 by Abu'l-Qasim Firdausi, tells the history of Persia from the creation of the world until the Islamic conquest in the 7th century. In this dynamic composition, Faramarz, a celebrated hero, is shown surrounded by enemy forces. The scene is alive with movement, as horses gallop and swords clash. The vivid colors and intricate details, from the soldiers' armor to the horses' trappings, create a rich and immersive visual experience. While illustrating a specific historical narrative, this painting also speaks to universal themes of courage, conflict, and the struggle between good and evil. The emotional intensity of the scene is palpable, inviting viewers to reflect on the human cost of war and the enduring power of storytelling. The artwork underscores the importance of cultural heritage and the ways in which art can preserve and transmit collective memory.
