Emile Vernon created "Aux Roses" at some point in his career, using oil paint to bring this scene to life. Look at that peachy dress! And those flowers practically overflowing from the basket! You can almost smell them, can't you? It's like Vernon wanted to capture a perfect moment, a fleeting glimpse of beauty and youth. I imagine Vernon standing before his easel, carefully mixing his colours to get just the right shade of pink for her cheeks. It's not just about capturing a likeness, it’s about creating a feeling. And the way he handles the light, it’s so soft and gentle. The paint itself looks creamy and smooth, like he’s caressing the canvas. I guess Vernon’s was part of that whole academic tradition, but here he’s really pushing it towards something…dreamy. Thinking about this painting, I'm reminded of how artists are always building on what came before, taking inspiration and pushing it in new directions.
