This ‘Skull’ was created by Mabuse using oil paint, a relatively new medium at the time. Oil allowed for a new level of realism, as we can clearly see here. Note how Mabuse used his technical skill with layering and blending to build up this image from dark to light. The painting technique mimics the slow, geological processes that form the materials in our bodies. The skeletal structure and fragile, paper banner are given substance by the artist’s hand. A single, sinuous line in the background reminds us of the constant passage of time and the ephemeral nature of human life. Mabuse had a close relationship with the courts of Europe, and he fully understood that the powerful families around him would eventually face mortality. This painting is a ‘memento mori’ to remind us that, although social and material conditions affect our lives and deaths, our bones will be the great leveler in the end. Let's remember the importance of materials, making, and context to fully understand this piece.
