Joakim Skovgaard made this sketch of figures sometime in his life with pencil on paper. It’s all about the line here, isn't it? A quest to find form through these tentative strokes. The translucency of the paper and the fragility of the marks, give the work an intimate feel. Look at the way the figures emerge from the ground. Skovgaard is feeling his way around the forms, using the pencil to feel out the weight and volume of the bodies as they push and pull on one another. The lines aren't precious. They're searching. See how some of them double back, or fade in and out? This isn't about perfect representation. It's about the act of seeing and trying to capture something essential about the human form. It reminds me a little of Rodin’s drawings, all energy and movement. It's a good reminder that art isn't about answers, it's about the questions we ask along the way.
