Curatorial notes
This print, "Het oud vermakelijk luylekker-land," was created by Johannes Kannewet. It is a black and white scene that strikes us with its dense detail and whimsical excess. The composition is organized horizontally, encouraging the eye to wander through a landscape filled with bizarre imagery. The landscape is divided into three distinct areas: figures indulging in food and leisure, a group of figures and animals on the right moving towards a decorative building, and a more fantastical, mountainous area in the background. These elements create a playful inversion of established hierarchies and values. Kannewet employs a visual language filled with symbolic inversions, challenging societal norms through the lens of satire and humor. Kannewet's art provides a space for critiquing values and reimagining our relationship with societal structures. It reminds us that art is not just about aesthetics, but about challenging and questioning the world around us.
