Curatorial notes

Léon Laroche made this print of two comfortable armchairs at some point, using a precise and detailed approach to capture their ornate designs. I find myself drawn to the pastel color palette – the soft greens, yellows, and blues – which gives the image a delicate and airy feel. The material aspects of this print really shape how we experience it. Look at the intricate details of the tassels and fringe, which suggest a tactile richness. It’s as if Laroche wanted us to imagine sinking into these chairs. Notice, also, how the artist uses line to define the form, creating a sense of depth and volume despite the flatness of the paper. This interplay between line and color gives the print a unique visual texture. Thinking about other artists, someone like David Hockney, with his playful use of color and line to depict domestic spaces, comes to mind. Ultimately, this print invites us to appreciate the beauty and artistry found in everyday objects.
