Lawrence Flynn made this watercolor of a Hitchcock Rocker, we don’t have the exact date, but I like to think of the creative process being similar no matter when you're making something. Flynn’s light touch with the watercolor gives the wood a luminous quality, as if the chair itself is emitting a soft glow. The darker washes pool in the seat, inviting you to sit down and maybe rock for a while, and it’s cool the way he brings out the decorative gold stencils with delicate brushwork. I love that. Look closely at the back of the chair, there are these stylized flowers or leaves that almost feel like a secret language. For me, this resonates with Guston's late work, where everyday objects are transformed into enigmatic symbols, and it becomes this ongoing conversation, proving that art embraces ambiguity over easy answers, leaving room for everyone to chime in.
