Jan Gerritsz Swelinck made this small engraving called *Mei*. The composition is split between a pastoral background and a foreground narrative scene of figures in discussion, creating a rich tapestry of texture. The figures command immediate attention, carefully positioned in relation to each other. Their robes are rendered with close, fine lines creating light and shadow to give volume. Note the contrast between the stillness of the seated figure and the active poses of the others. The artist has used precise engraving techniques to differentiate textures, from the rough bark of trees to the smooth surfaces of the figures' robes. This meticulous detail enhances the tactile quality of the artwork. The print invites contemplation on themes of labor, leisure, and the natural cycle, mirroring the Gemini symbol in the top center of the print, which is the sign for May. Swelinck, through this combination of form and symbolism, created a complex visual representation of the month.
