Pieter Jansz. created this drawing with pen in brown ink. The composition is carefully organized into three horizontal registers, each filled with figures in various poses and attire. The figures appear as types rather than portraits, reduced to essential lines that define their forms. Jansz. uses line to articulate the folds of clothing and the contours of bodies, creating a rhythmic pattern across the sheet. The figures are uniformly distributed, yet there's a lack of central focus which denies a hierarchical reading. The use of minimal shading and detail emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the page. This challenges the traditional artistic values of depth and realism. It invites us to consider how Jansz. uses the graphic medium to explore the semiotic potential of line and form.
