Iain Baxter& made "Nude" with photography; it's as if the image came to life directly from the undergrowth. It's kind of magical. The image's surface has a soft, diffused quality that makes me think about the physical properties of light, and the way it filters through leaves in the forest. The tones are warm, like a memory. I love the way that the dark fur coat contrasts with the model's skin. It's this interplay between shadow and light that gives the picture a feeling of depth and mystery. Like Manet, Baxter& uses the nude to make an investigation into the act of seeing. Ultimately, what I find compelling about this work is its open-endedness. It resists easy categorization, inviting us to bring our own associations and experiences to bear on the image. That's what makes art so exciting, right?
