Anselm Feuerbach painted 'Nanna' using oil on canvas. Feuerbach’s brushstrokes blend classical and contemporary techniques, building up thin layers of paint to capture the light on Nanna's skin and clothing. Note the texture of the linen and her delicate veil. It’s easy to overlook the craft here, but think of the labor involved in preparing canvases and grinding pigments. Oil painting was not always considered a ‘fine art’ medium, particularly with its roots in craft traditions and applications in decorating furniture. As painting became more closely associated with individual artistic expression, these connections to labor and material processes were often overlooked. By focusing on these aspects of the work, we can appreciate not only Feuerbach’s talent, but also the value of skilled work and material transformation.
