"The Star" card was created by French cardmaker Claude Burdel, sometime in the late 18th century, using woodcut and stencils to apply color. This card is from the Tarot of Marseilles, a deck deeply rooted in European history, used for both gameplay and divination. The card features a nude woman kneeling by water, pouring liquid from two vessels, beneath eight stars. What does it mean to see a woman, exposed, as a symbol of hope and renewal? The Star often embodies themes of inspiration, serenity, and connection to the divine. It appears at a time when the social norms regarding gender roles and the female body were very strict, especially the concept of women in the public sphere. Consider the power of this image. The Star invites us to reflect on our own sources of hope, and the emotional currents that connect us to the world.
