Geerlig Grijpmoed created this landscape with figures by a bridge with pen in gray and brush in gray. The image is composed of a bridge, which serves as the centerpiece, and three figures. A man, possibly fishing or walking, strides across the bridge, while a seated woman and standing man are on the other side. The bridge itself is an ancient symbol of transition, of moving from one state of being to another. Bridges in art and dreams signify passages, changes, or perhaps overcoming obstacles. We might think of it as a metaphor for the human journey through life, a sentiment echoed in countless artworks across eras. For example, bridges also appear in Chinese landscape paintings, connecting the human and spiritual realms. And in ancient Roman art, bridges symbolized imperial power, engineering prowess, and the ability to connect disparate parts of the empire. The bridge’s psychological implication speaks to the emotional and subconscious desire to overcome challenges and connect with new possibilities.
