Curatorial notes

Childe Hassam invites us into a sun-drenched garden scene with his painting, “Promenaders in the Garden”. Hassam was a prominent American Impressionist painter whose work often depicted upper-middle-class life at the turn of the 20th century. Although the work seems like a pleasant snapshot of a day in the park, Hassam also made a number of paintings that are considered patriotic, particularly his famous flag series. Notice the attention to the women’s garments: the painterly rendering of fabric and form, and the careful depiction of the women's clothing, situates them within a specific class and social structure. Hassam focuses on the quiet moments of domestic life, but it doesn’t quite escape an engagement with larger socio-political issues. As you reflect on Hassam’s “Promenaders in the Garden,” consider how it not only captures a fleeting moment of beauty but also reflects the cultural values and social dynamics of its time.
