Mercedes Bock made this photograph, "Landschap in Tirol," sometime in the past, using light and shadow as her brushes. I imagine Bock, camera in hand, stepping into this scene, trying to capture the immensity of the Tyrol landscape in a tiny frame. It’s all about light here. See how the fog blurs the line between earth and sky, wrapping the mountains in a soft embrace? I think she might have been inspired by the Romantic painters, those guys who were all about drama and the sublime. They wanted to capture the feeling of being overwhelmed by nature, which is very different to someone like Constable. This image is a quiet conversation, like a whisper between the artist and the mountains. It shows us that artists aren't just making stuff in a vacuum. We’re all looking at each other’s work, riffing on old ideas, and trying to find new ways to see the world. And when we do that, we invite you to see it with us.
