Ishii Hakutei made this print, December 1910, and I’m immediately drawn to the way the plants seem to emerge from a creamy ground. It’s all about process. The flat colour and distinct outlines create a striking contrast. Hakutei builds up texture within each form, and it almost reminds me of my own layering approach. Look at the fruit; the artist creates a sense of depth through the repetitive, controlled application of small circles. It's like building something cell by cell. The choice of muted tones—grey-green and light brown—gives the print a soothing, almost melancholic quality. It reminds me of the work of Hiroshige, with its sensitivity to light and atmosphere. The conversation never ends! Each artist adds their voice, making us see the world anew.
