Eva Hesse made this untitled sculpture, likely from latex, cord and wire, with such a tender, sensual vulnerability. It's a dance between control and release, isn't it? There is a certain eroticism, or tactility, that arises from the forms of the work. A tension between the smooth, almost pearlescent or egg-like forms held loosely within the rigid structure of the string net. The latex, it's aged so it’s no longer the color of fresh milk but has gained a certain depth. And that cord, wrapping and binding, creating this sort of fragile architecture. It makes you wonder about what's contained, what's being protected or exposed. Hesse, like Louise Bourgeois, had this uncanny ability to turn the personal into something universal. Their works operate within this intimate zone of memory and feeling, transforming the hidden aspects of our experience into something tangible and shared. It’s not fixed; it’s always in flux.
