Henri de Groux made this print, "Landscape with Lion and Saint Jerome with Book," using etching, a process that marries artistic vision with industrial technique. The image is achieved by drawing into a wax ground on a metal plate, then submerging it in acid. The acid bites into the metal where the wax has been removed, creating recessed lines that hold ink. This plate is then pressed onto paper, transferring the image. Look closely, and you’ll see the rich, dark tones and fine lines characteristic of etching. This method allowed artists to produce multiple copies of their work, making art more accessible and aligning with the rise of mass production. It’s fascinating to consider how this blend of craft and technology democratized art, challenging traditional notions of artistic uniqueness and labor.
