This Zeeuwse silver ducat was produced in 1772 by the Province of Zeeland. We see the provincial coat of arms supported by a figure and inscribed with the motto "LUCRI FULCRA." Consider the sword in the figure's hand: throughout history, the sword has symbolized power, authority, and justice. From ancient Roman gladii to medieval knights' blades, its presence signifies protection and command. The bundle of arrows, held together by a ribbon, harkens back to the Roman fasces, representing unity and strength through collective action. These symbols of authority and communal strength can be seen echoed in various emblems across time. But what happens when these symbols are repurposed, reinterpreted, or even satirized? Their meanings shift, reflecting societal changes and cultural contexts. Even so, the sword and bundle of arrows leave an imprint on the collective memory, resurfacing to evoke both strength and the potential for conflict. This evolution of symbols is a testament to their enduring psychological power, continuing to resonate in the depths of our subconscious.
