Masaccio painted "St. Peter Healing the Sick with His Shadow" in Florence during the early 1420s. This fresco is found in the Brancacci Chapel, a space dominated by scenes from the life of St. Peter. The painting powerfully represents the social realities of Florence at the time. Notice how Masaccio situates the biblical scene within a recognizable urban landscape, complete with contemporary architecture and clothing. By doing so, Masaccio collapses the distance between the biblical narrative and the viewer's own reality. The cripples and beggars highlight the disparities of wealth and health present in Florentine society. The healing power of St. Peter and, by extension, the Church offered solace and hope to those marginalized in a rapidly changing economy. Art historians use archival documents, social histories, and religious treatises to understand this image's deep connections to the cultural and institutional contexts of Renaissance Florence.
