Jan Both created this etching, titled 'Les Deux Vaches Au Bord De L'Eau,' using ink on paper in the 17th century. This serene pastoral scene offers a glimpse into the romanticized view of the Italian countryside favored by Dutch Golden Age painters. Here, the presence of the working class, along with their livestock, raises questions about labor, land, and the complex relationship between humans and nature. Are these figures merely picturesque elements, or do they hint at the economic realities that sustained the idyllic landscapes? Both's choice to depict ruins alongside the natural beauty invites reflection on the passage of time, and the rise and fall of civilizations, as well as the resilience of nature. How might the artist have viewed the relationship between the built environment and the natural world, especially given the Dutch Republic's own landscape transformations? Perhaps Both invites us to contemplate our place within this continuum.
