Roar of Space 1919

Johannes Molzahn made this monochrome print titled "Roar of Space" using woodcut, a relief printing technique that involves carving into a wooden block to leave a raised design which is then inked and pressed onto paper. I can imagine Molzahn really going at it, carving those shapes into the wood. With each cut he must have felt the power of creation, deciding what to leave and what to take away. It's not just about the shapes, but about the space they create and the energy that pulses between them. Those bold lines, that contrast, that’s the roar! This print reminds me of other artists who were pushing boundaries and questioning conventions like Kandinsky and Malevich. They were all part of this ongoing conversation, riffing off each other's ideas. And the conversation continues today!
