This white lace edging, toothed and with picots, on cardboard, sits here in the Rijksmuseum, crafted by Gustav Schnitzler, at an unknown date. It's easy to overlook something like this, but when you slow down, the handmade process is so clear, so intimate. The material itself is remarkable. The delicate, openwork of the lace contrasting with the stiff, aged cardboard. I'm drawn to the way the threads intertwine, creating patterns of light and shadow. It feels like a drawing in space. It also feels very much like something by Agnes Martin - those very very pale colours, the way she would mark a canvas over and over again with the lightest of touches, until it felt right. There’s a quiet beauty in this simple piece, a testament to the artistry found in everyday objects, and that's something that always speaks to me.
