Elizabeth Murray made 'Careless Love' from an unknown date, using paint on canvas, or maybe wood, who knows? The colors in this piece are like a faded memory, all blush pinks and mellow yellows, like an old photograph. The forms are outlined, but not really contained, they bleed into each other, which is something I really love. The mark making feels like a puzzle, and the composition reminds me of a painting being smashed and reassembled. Take a look at that small square area towards the middle, that dark blue against the faded pink. It's like a tiny window into another world. The physicality of the painting is interesting, and the surface is uneven, a little bumpy, which gives it a handmade feel. It reminds me of some of the early cubists, Braque and Picasso, who were also playing with form and space in radical ways. Ultimately, 'Careless Love' is a reminder that art is always a conversation, an ongoing exploration of ideas and possibilities.
