Cornelis Springer created this pencil drawing of men in seventeenth-century clothing. Springer lived through a period of significant social change, including the rise of nationalism, industrialization, and urbanization. While seemingly a simple study, consider the gaze with which Springer recreates the attire of the 17th century. During the 19th century, historical and genre painting was very popular, perhaps because it offered a kind of nostalgic yearning for a simpler past. The subjects portrayed are members of the bourgeoisie. Their elaborate clothing speaks to the privilege afforded to them by their socio-economic standing. At the same time, Springer’s choice to focus on these figures evokes questions of national identity and class aspirations. Look closely, what can you discern about the lives of the individuals depicted and the society in which they lived?
