Lidded Jar c. 1700 - 1724

This lidded jar, of unknown date and maker, is made of glazed ceramic and decorated with painted scenes. The vessel's creation would have required significant technical skill. To begin, potter’s clay was carefully chosen and prepared, then thrown on a wheel to achieve its distinctive form. Once dried, it was fired at high temperatures. This process transforms the clay permanently, giving it strength. Then, layers of colored glaze were applied, requiring further firings to achieve its final, vibrant appearance. The handles were likely molded and attached separately. Finally, the painted decoration transforms this functional vessel into a beautiful object. Although we don’t know who made this jar, we can appreciate the many skilled hands that contributed to its making. This piece reflects a close relationship between artistic expression and craft production.
