This is "Heilige Maria als kluizenares" by Christoffel van Sichem II, an engraving made around the 17th century. The composition is dominated by dense cross-hatching which creates a powerful chiaroscuro effect. This heightens the emotional impact of the scene. We see Mary, niece of Abraham, as a hermit, her gaze directed toward the crucifix. The lines, deeply etched, give a palpable texture to everything they define: the rough texture of the rock-face behind her, the fall of her gown, the contorted body of Christ. The linear precision creates a semiotic system that reinforces the religious content of the piece. The directional hatching leads the viewer's eye to the crucifix which is the focal point of the work. Sichem uses line to convey not just form but also the spiritual intensity of the moment. Ultimately, it is the formal elements—line, texture, and composition—that communicate and reinforce the deeper cultural narratives that Sichem sought to express.
