This etching, "Heilige Juan Diego in de wildernis ontvangt aalmoezen," was created by Simon Guillain II in the 17th century. The composition is structured around contrasting spatial arrangements. A sharp, almost theatrical backdrop positions the figures, while subtle gradations of light and shadow define the forms of the figures. The figures occupy a constructed wilderness, a stage-like space that raises questions about nature versus artifice. Guillain uses lines to create both texture and depth, while the figures in the background become more linear, reducing the spatial depth of the setting. The contrast between the detailed foreground and the simplified background invites a semiotic reading: the foreground action is 'real,' while the background figures serve more as symbolic elements, like figures in a tapestry. The whole image functions less as a straightforward depiction and more as a carefully structured arrangement of visual signs, intended to provoke thought about representation and its relationship to reality.
