Curator: Pablo Picasso’s “Dish of Pears,” currently held at the Tate Modern, presents a complex still life using oil on canvas. Editor: The canvas has a subdued mood with the muted colours and jagged shapes and edges, like fragments of a memory or dream. Curator: Note the fractured depiction. Pears are both present and abstracted, echoing a Cubist sensibility. The symbolism of fruit, traditionally associated with plenty and sensuality, is almost undermined by the deconstruction. Editor: Yes, the sharp angles disrupt any easy interpretation. The interplay of light and shadow, or the lack thereof, emphasizes the painting's flattened plane and the radical rejection of illusionism. Curator: The composition recalls vanitas paintings, but here, instead of explicit symbols of mortality, we get a splintered reality. The cultural narrative shifts from a simple memento mori to a commentary on perception itself. Editor: Precisely! It challenges our preconceived notions of what a still life should be. I’m struck by the material presence of the paint itself and how it contributes to the overall fragmentation.

The dishes of pears in this still life are painted in a flat, graphic style. The white area behind the fruit was added as the final layer of the painting. It creates a sense of space behind the pears instead of a flat background of colour. Thick black lines separate the different elements in the painting. The result is an almost abstract pattern of colours and shapes. Picasso painted still life subjects throughout his career and in a range of different styles. Gallery label, September 2019
