Composition Study with Three Figures Standing on a Rock
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Henri Lehmann made this composition study with pen and brown ink on paper. The quickly sketched lines have a life of their own. Look closely, and you can see the artist thinking through his options, the composition unfolding before our eyes. Although this is just a sketch, the materials already offer a sense of the overall aesthetic: academic and historical. The use of pen and ink, common in Old Master drawings, speaks to a lineage of artistic practice, a tradition of skilled draftsmanship. The paper support allows for an immediacy and flexibility. The rapid execution suggests an interest in capturing fleeting ideas, a contrast to the labor-intensive processes associated with more finished paintings. And so it is that even in its raw state, the work reflects a complex interplay between concept, material, and the artist’s hand. Appreciating this gives us a deeper insight into Lehmann's artistic process.
