This ‘Flounce’ was made by Verdé, Delisle & Cie. The composition is dominated by intricate floral patterns that create a dense, almost overwhelming visual texture against a contrasting ground. The shapes are organic, with leaves, vines and blossoms intertwining. The lace is a network of connections and intersections that invite us to consider the relationship between form and void, and the interplay between positive and negative space. The choice of material, lace, further adds to the artwork’s structural complexity, given the combination of fragility and intricate geometric patterns. The interplay between opacity and transparency disrupts the conventional understanding of surface and depth. In line with post-structuralist thought, it destabilizes any fixed meanings or values. The lace challenges the viewer to reconsider traditional notions of beauty, representation, and the very structure of visual meaning itself.
