About this artwork

Lucas van Leyden created "Mars, Venus, and Cupid" using engraving techniques. The composition is split into two distinct parts, each dominated by a figure sitting on a plinth. Van Leyden masterfully uses line to model form and create a range of tonal values from the deepest blacks to the lightest greys. The composition invites a semiotic reading, a dialogue between love and war, feminine and masculine. Mars on the right, with sword and helmet, is counterpoised by Venus to the left with her son Cupid. The sword creates a vertical division, yet Cupid leans across this boundary, reaching towards his mother, creating a visual bridge between these contrasting figures. The tension between these opposing forces suggests a playful exploration of how love and war are perpetually entwined. The artist challenges fixed categories through dynamic composition, inviting ongoing interpretation.
