Curatorial notes
This bronze medal portrays François I, Henri II, and François II, Kings of France, and was created around 1559. The triple portrait immediately strikes us with its linear precision and shallow depth, playing with the superimposition of profiles, creating a combined face, and the medal's circular form underscores the cyclical nature of power and succession. The arrangement, reminiscent of Roman portraiture, reflects the Renaissance revival of classical forms. The clean lines and the medium's metallic sheen lend the work a sense of permanence and authority. But this display of royal continuity belies the fractures within the French monarchy during this period. The medal, therefore, functions as both a celebration of the unbroken lineage and a subtle commentary on its inherent fragility. It invites us to consider how artistic representation can both affirm and destabilize the very foundations of power it seeks to uphold.
